Neymar JR Biography

Born Neymar da Silva Santos Junior in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil, Neymar has come a long way from the little boy who was playing for Portuguesa Santista (Youth Side), to a professional footballer who holds the record for the most expensive football transfer in history.

Neymar was born to Neymar Santos, Sr and Nadine da Silva on 5 February 1992. He inherited his father’s name (commonly called Neymar Jnr), who was a former footballer and is his advisor when his football talents began to grow.

Neymar started his football career quite early after been spotted by Santos FC, the club offered him a contract in 2003, he was just 11 years old. In 2009, he made his professional debut at the age of 17.

Neymar continued to climb higher in the ladder of success, becoming a player to watch out for and one of the favorites in the Fifa World Cup 2014.

He moved to Barcelona on 24 May 2013 after signing a five year deal for an undisclosed transfer fee. Controversy later followed as investigations were carried out on the transfer fee that Barcelona reportedly paid for Neymar. It was later disclosed that he transfer fee was €86.2 million against the €57.1 million the club claimed to have spent.

Neymar made his unofficial debut, when he came on as a substituted in a pre – season friendly between Barcelona and Lechai Gdank on 30 July, 2013; the game ended in a 2 – 2 draw.

During the 2014 – 15 La Liga season, Neymar proved his genius be delivering goals and several assists for his club. Neymar ended the season with 39 goals in all competitions and 10 in the Champions League, which equates him to Cristiano Ronaldo and teammate Lionel Messi as the season’s highest scorer.

On 2 April 2017, Neymar marked his 177th appearance for the club by scoring his 100th goal.

There were rumours that Neymar was up for transfer and on 3 August 2017, it was confirmed by his club that his legal representatives made a payment of €222 million (the most expensive transfer in history).

Neymar was to join the French club Paris Saint – Germain after agreeing to a five year deal, that is expected to run until 2022.

Neymar’s playing style, his dribbling skills, playmaking ability and tricks are reminiscent of compatriot Ronaldinho, He has been described as a “true phenomenon” due to his ability to play different positions on the field and make it look easy. He has also been compared to Brazilian legend Pele who also came from Santos Youth Academy just like Neymar.

Neymar has received several awards for both club and country with the Olympic Gold Medal: 2016 being his latest.

Net Worth and Sponsorships

During his career, Neymar has signed many sponsorship deals for big sports and electronic brands. He signed an 11 year contract with American sportswear company Nike in March 2011. In the same month, he signed a 2 year contract with Panasonic, reportedly worth US$2.4 million. He signed other sponsorship deals with Volkswagen, Ambev, Unilever, Claro, Santander and Tenys Pe Baruel.

He earned a total of $18.8 million in annual wages in 2012 and an estimated €20 million per year from his sponsorship deals.

Neymar is reportedly expected to earn €30 million per year at Paris Saint – Germain after tax.
